The use of dimensions and geometric tolerances (GD&T) is based on international standards:
o ASME Y14.5-2009
o ISO 1101:2012
These standards play a critical role in technical drawing and reading. The standards define symbols, definitions, rules and conventions. Without standards, detailed notes are required to ensure unambiguous definition of performance and inspection requirements for a manufactured item.
The most widely used standards in industry are ASME and ISO. There are also country-specific standards, mostly based on these standards. Much effort was made in the 1990s to reduce the gaps between ISO and ASME standards. Nevertheless, there are still differences in symbol definitions and various rules between the standards.
